Pure genius student marketing

I don't think Nottingham University student Alex Tew will have any difficulty getting a job when he graduates. There's always one here if he wants it.

Faced with the prospect of a student debt of £30,000, he came up with the idea of selling a million pixels on his home page, for a dollar each. Of course, a pixel isn't much use to anyone, so the minimum purchase is 100 pixels, which can be used to advertise your website.

As the BBC notes, if he sells all his pixels, he'll have a lot more than he needs to buy textbooks. And it'll more than cover a few pairs of the expensive socks he wants. So he says he'll give some to his parents and invest the rest in a couple of interesting business ideas he's got up his sleeve.

Call me a sucker, but I'm off to buy myself some pixels. I don't think it'll help with our search engine rankings (too many outbound links on the page, with no relevance). I'm not even convinced that the sort of people that will click on my pixels will be the target audience for our consultancy services. But damn I love a good idea, and I'm only too pleased to support that kind of initiative.

Oh bloody hell, everyone's at it now!

But where Alex Tew's site is right on the money, pixelget leaves me stone cold. Why? Because Alex has packaged his site as part of a story about himself. It's more engaging. I want him to be successful.

Pixelget is a completely anonymous site described as being set up by 'two students'.

So the only reason for buying on pixelgate is advertising space, and for that, it's a totally flawed model.

Bekel challenges Tew!

In slipstream of all commotion around this complete new stunning kind of website, Bekel challenges Tew! After Alex Tew started to sell every pixel of his homepage, internet specialist Joost Bekel came up with an idea even more spectacular! Bekel said earlier he can do better than Tew and offers much more fun while raising money. He wants to raise $10.000/week from 1. November 2005 on. That's when he expects his newborn baby. Isn't that cute? So he divided the week into 10.000 little pieces: 1 minute each and offers every piece to the audience for 1 dollar!

Now Bekel has set his mind to beat Tew. Tew mentioned in his blog his expected income for September. "September is for Tew, October probably as well, but November will be my month!" Bekel is convinced his concept is even more genious than Tew's and offers more value to the visitor.

On the question if he needs really $10.000 for his kid Bekel answers: Does Alex Tew need $1.000.000 for his study? ;-)

Nope, that idea doesn't work either.

a) I'd rather sponsor my baby than yours.

b) One minute? It just doesn't do it for me. It's not quite the same as a permanent slot on a 'piece of internet history', is it.

you're right simple rips or copy's aren't that cool...
but what do you think about not selling just simple pixels, than selling a cool star that rocks?

Check out http://www.PixelAds4All.com - they offer a FREE 100 by 100 pixel "tool tip image" with the purchase of your ad, which acts like a billboard for your site! They are also currently offering their pixels for 50% off, or $50 USD for a 100 pixel block.

After seeing the success that milliondollarhomepage.com was having, I started up my own ad space website, however it's based on bytes rather than pixels. Depending on how low you can get the file size, ads can cost over half as much as ads on pixel-based ad space sites. To the best of my knowledge, it’s the first byte-based ad site on the internet. Hopefully, it’s enough of a departure from the “pixel pusher” concept to create decent traffic and create a buzz. Check out www.buckabyte.com for more on the internet’s first byte-size site.

If I was the kind of person who bought pixel ads, and let me stress I'm not because it's so untargeted, I might go for something like companybattleships.com which seems to have some quite nice programming behind it and is doing well on Google for "pixels for sale".

Take a look at companybattleships.com. Ads are ships that periodically compete in a sea battle. There's a live, real-time demo battle at the site. How did they program it without Flash?

I believe that Alex's site still generates some indirect value for advertisers at least by improving their visibility in search engines. It has a PageRank of 7 and many still continue to add links to it (by the way, this article has just added one link). So, getting the link from website with such a high PageRank for as low as 1$ it is clearly a reasonable investment. Good luck to all the copycats :)
